The Global Training and Development Institute (GTDI) is a unit within University of Connecticut Global Affairs that offers innovative academic services and specialized training to international students and professionals through exchange programs across multiple disciplines. Our Institute was established in 1961 as the Institute of Public Service International (IPSI) to offer short-term training to administrators and managers of public, private, and non-governmental organizations across the world. In 2003 we adopted the name "Global Training and Development Institute" to reflect our commitment to meeting the challenges of global development. Since our founding, more than 10,000 government officials, business and non-profit leaders, and university students from 130 countries have participated in the Institute’s education and training programs.
In the last decade we had the opportunity to develop international programming on enhancing public health, environmental sustainability, youth development, and economic empowerment for disadvantaged and marginalized communities. As a result, GTDI has partnered with over 70 private sector companies, non-profit organizations, public agencies and universities. At the same time, through GTDI programming, we`ve planned and implemented over 75 social development projects many of which are funded by federal grants and supported by our own GTDI program alumni. These projects are located in local communities throughout Africa, Latin America, Europe, and Asia.
In July 2024 we welcomed a group of students from China for the second time since 2021 on our main campus. Students took lectures from distinguished UConn professors and enjoyed field trips designed to highlight the distinctive US culture, history and literature.
